#1 - El Camaleón Golf Course
El Camaleón perfectly captures all of the breathtaking natural features the Cancún area has to offer. From 2 holes right along the Caribbean Sea, which have long been in my rotation of golf background images, to holes along cenotes which are famous in this Mayan region. And this doesn’t even mention possibly the most unique element of a golf hole in the world affectionately known as the “Devils Mouth“.
Your first obstacle of the day when you tee off on 1 is a massive cave bunker in the middle of the fairway. Be sure to stop and explore the cave, but stay well clear on your tee shot as this is one bunker you do not want to find yourself in!
El Camaleón won’t be the longest course you come up against, maxing out at 7,116 yards from the tips. But it demands precision when flirting with its narrow fairways and ocean breezes. As a longtime host of the PGA Tour and now LIV Golf the practice facilities are 2nd to none in the area. Tee times can range from $260 – $349 a round but are fully all-inclusive. Overall making this for our money the best golf course in Cancún!
#2 - PGA Riviera Maya
PGA Riviera Maya is quite literally carved out of the Mayan jungle. The course was designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones II right next to an old limestone quarry. There are breathtaking views around every corner as the course weaves through the jungle around natural lakes and cenotes.
At just over 7,200 yards if you can keep your shots in the fairway, you’ll surely be rewarded with a good lie and a challenging, but fair approach. Jones carefully carved the golf course from the deepest part of a limestone quarry, spreading the fairways across treacherous jungle growth that is just waiting to swallow up errant shots. In addition to the championship layout, there is also an Executive Course that is one of the best nine-hole golf courses in the Rivera Maya.
Depending on the time of year rounds at the PGA can cost anywhere from $157 – $210.
#3 - Iberostar Playa Pariso
Iberostar Playa Pariso is resort golf at its finest. Just across the street from the 5-star Iberostar resort is this beautifully designed P.B. Dye golf course. Measuring just 6,800 yards from the back tees, like the other courses on this list it’s not going to beat you up in length but with the precision the holes require. Unlike other courses in the area, P.B. Dye took advantage of undulating and well-bunkered greens to place a premium on accuracy. There is a reason this course has been featured on the PGA Latin America and Canadian Tours.
The golf is amazing but what can really put this course over the top is the service. Green fees include a cart, appetizers, and unlimited drinks during the round, including beer, wine, spirits, bottled water, and soft drinks. Tee times can set you back $179 – $249 but great savings can be found if you’re an Iberostar guest.
#4 - Moon Palace: Lakes 9 & Dunes 9
Moon Palace is 27 Jack Nicklaus designed holes with water everywhere you look. If you love a good challenge the Dunes/Lakes combo will challenge you with its tight fairways, forced carries over water, and its undulating sandy waste areas provide a stern test of anyone’s golfing ability. No matter which set of 9 holes you play you’ll find beautifully manicured holes and water challenging you everywhere you look.
Moon Palace is another great all-inclusive course that includes everything you need for a great day out on the course. Green fees can vary from $179 up to $285 a round.
#5 - Playa Mujeres
Playa Mujeres is located north of most of the resorts but is well worth the journey. The 18-hole Greg Norman-designed course sits among the natural jungle and is prone to receive stiff trade winds that demand pinpoint accuracy and can challenge any level of player.
Keep your eye out on the 172-yard par 3 6th, home of the affectionately known “Big Al”, the resident alligator, who likes to hang around the green. On your way back in the 16th plays right in towards the ocean and depending on the wind can play way longer than its 386 yards listed on the scorecard.
You can play Playa Mujeres for around $165 to $245 depending on the time of day and year.
#6 - Cancun El Tinto
El Tinto is the first of two planned 18-hole courses located in a massive 1,100-acre residential development just 15 minutes from downtown Cancun. Designed by Nick Price, the course uses its natural elevation and water features with 5 natural lakes and 80 strategically placed bunkers making this a difficult but fair test to your golf game. A tee time here will set you back anywhere from $157 to $197.
#7 - Hard Rock: Riviera Maya
This is a whole lot more than your typical Hard Rock Cafe. The Hard Rock: Riviera Maya is located about an hour south of the Cancún Hotel Zone but is well worth the drive. At only 7,200 yards the course is one of the shortest on the list but it is also one of the tightest courses on the list. Tom Doak the course architect described it as “very narrow between trees, with a lot of sharp doglegs. There are homes bordering most of the holes, but the jungle is so thick you’d hardly notice.”
If you like shot shaping and are up for a challenge this could be the course for you. You can get an all-inclusive tee time for $250. If after 18 you haven’t had enough the course also offers a great deal on replays for just $35!
#8 - Riviera Cancún
Just outside the hotel zone is another must-play course, Riviera Cancún. Another tough track with its narrow fairways, sandy waste areas and water hazards that come into play on over half the holes. The Jack Nicklaus course was unveiled in 2008 and set itself apart from its peers with its heavily contoured greens that bring in another level of challenge and can make holes play completely different day to day based on pin position.
Riviera is another all-inclusive course that you can play for $197 – $236 a round.
#9 - Iberostar Cancún Golf Club
The sister course of #3 on our list is Iberostar’s Cancún Golf Club. Located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, this is one of the most convenient courses for those staying in Cancún. Designed by Japanese golfer Isao Aoki the course integrates natural inlets from the lagoon as water hazards. The fairways are wide and forgiving and offer some of the best panoramic views of the Cancún area. The course is yet another fully all-inclusive and can be played for only $125 to $169 a round. Making it one of the better deals for premier Cancún golf courses!
#10 - Puerto Cancún
Another great centrally located golf course is Puerto Cancún. Located right in the middle of downtown Cancún and the hotel zone. The Tom Weiskopf-designed course lets the natural splendor of the tropical setting take center stage. From the back tees, the Puerto Cancun Golf Club measures just over 7,200 yards, with holes that will put your short game and distance control to the test. Accuracy is required on the curving fairways, and the greenside traps are positioned with care. With a green that is located on an island in Puerto Cancun’s major canal, the last hole is a memorable one.
